What are hemorrhoids?

  • They are blood vessels that have become swollen around your rear end.
  • They can be itchy, uncomfortable, or sometimes painful.
  • Hemorrhoids are common in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.
  • To avoid getting hemorrhoids, try eating a diet with a lot of fiber so you don’t get constipated. Also drink a lot of water each day and get regular exercise.
  • Try not to sit or stand for a long period of time. If you sit all day at work, stand up for a few minutes each hour.
  • At home, lie on your left side when you can to take the pressure off your rear end.

If you have hemorrhoids:

  • Try using an ice pack to get rid of swelling and pain.
  • Soak in a warm tub a few times each day.
  • Use ointments available at pharmacies.
  • Place baking soda in the area to relieve the itchiness.
  • Try drinking prune juice or taking fiber supplements or stool softeners.
  • Use witch hazel on the affected area.
  • Use moistened wipes instead of toilet paper.
  • Ask your provider for other tips.
