There are ways to prepare your home to reduce the risk of falling:
Always use the banister going up or down stairs. If you don’t have a banister, get one installed. Make sure the stairs are well-lit.
Keep rooms free of clutter, especially on floors.
If you have rugs, make sure they are flat so that you can’t trip on the edge. Put a skid-proof back under them so they don’t slide.
Make sure everything you need is at eye level or lower so that you don’t have to reach.
Put grab bars on bathroom walls near tub, shower, and toilet.
Use a non-skid bath mat in the shower or tub.
