What kind of exercise can people with chronic kidney disease do?

Exercise is good for everyone, including you! Being physically active helps your blood pressure and cholesterol and it also helps your mood. You will have more energy and you will feel better. You may even be able to stop taking some medicines.

Exercise tips for people on dialysis:

  • Try to exercise for 30 minutes every day. Include exercises for stretching, building strength and that raise your heart rate.

  • If you miss a dialysis appointment, don’t exercise that day.

Pay attention to how you feel during exercise. Stop and tell your doctor if you have:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Pain in your chest

  • Dizziness

  • Irregular heartbeats

  • Upset stomach

  • Leg cramps

  • Pain or pressure in your neck or jaw

  • Tiredness

  • Blurred vision
