Why it happens

Over time, a prosthetic device may shift out of place, wear down, or separate from the bone—called loosening. The risk can be highest in the first few months of recovery, while the tissue is still healing.

How to spot it

If you notice any of the following, call your doctor.

  • Instability in the joint

  • Abnormal swelling

  • Pain radiating outward

  • Sudden limitations in range of motion

Prevention tips

Avoid extreme movement during your initial recovery phase and, as much as possible, for the next few months. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for physical therapy closely, and take precautions to avoid falls and other injuries.
