Why it happens

When you’re recovering, you may not be moving around as much as usual. That puts you at a higher risk for a blood clot — a mass of semi-solid blood that can form in veins and travel to other parts of the body.

Prevention tips

You may have been put on blood thinners or instructed to wear compression socks to keep your blood flowing well. The best preventative measure is to get up regularly and walk around — even if just for a few minutes.

  • Try to move once an hour during the day.

  • Go for a walk daily – even if it is around the house.
