Heart failure can’t be cured but many people live comfortably for many years with it. If you take good care of yourself, having good health habits and following your doctor’s instructions carefully, you can be one of them!

It’s important to know the signs that your heart failure is getting worse, so you can let your doctor know immediately before the problem becomes really dangerous.

If you have any of these problems, call the doctor right away:

  • Weight gain of 2 pounds or more in a day or 5 pounds or more in a week.

  • Shortness of breath that gets worse, even during common activities or at rest.

  • Trouble breathing when lying down or sleeping.

  • More swelling in your feet, ankles, legs or stomach than you had before.

  • Extreme tiredness, lack of energy.

  • Dry, hacking cough.

  • Dizziness, confusion, sadness or depression.

  • Pain in your chest.
